About the artwork
Marathon is a tong-in-cheek commentary on iconicity, the proposition that there is a connection between a word’s image and its meaning. All the letters of the word “marathon” are given a numerical value through the ASCII code. I converted that numerical value with a few simple operations into the number 42, not coincidentally the distance of a marathon in kilometers.
David De Pooter is fascinated by the triangle word-image-meaning. He starts from the observation that letters are among the most powerful symbols mankind has ever designed. And that makes them ideally suited to create complex, layered works. David explores these possibilities from different angles and in different contexts: cultural, philosophical, art historical…. Some of his works therefore look playful; others are downright intriguing. But the ideas behind David’s work are not always easy to read. David’s work therefore firmly engages and intellectually challenges the viewer.
