Dimitris Siokis (b. 1990) is a photographer and visual artist based in Antwerp. He holds an MFA in photography from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp (2022) and has studied architecture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2015).

In his work, he seeks new methods of approaching the familiar. His interest lies in depicting how everyday events are transformed into patterns that lie on the surface of our social structures and vice versa. Balancing between the personal and the universal, between reality and its performance, his work explores the common elements cutting across our individual lives. Central to his artistic thinking is the concept of uncertainty, as a means of approaching the different facets of truth. In his practice, he incorporates improvisation and collab- orative processes that call for an open end approach to the photographic act. He has received the Roger de Conynck award (2022, Belgium) and he has also been awarded by ARTWORKS (2022, Greece) and is a Fellow of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Artist Support Program.

Description

The photograph is part of my last series, titled ‘Infinite Rehearsal’. The series is a mix of allegorical portraits and staged situations. It is a collaboration between the photographer and professional performers, reinterpreting personal experiences in the privacy of the studio space.

The events depicted in the photographs remain elusive and ambiguous. The focus lies on the nonverbal rela- tionships between the figures and the tension that develops within their interactions. Impoverished communi- cation mediated through phones and post-it notes is contradicted by gestures and body proximities. Intimacy and togetherness are challenged by dense remoteness and individualism.

The dynamics between the participants raise questions about the state of human connectedness in our tech- nology-driven societies. While together in the studio, the roles of the photographer, narrator and performer alternate, in an attempt to merge the personal with the collective.
