GERT MOTMANS (b. Hasselt, Belgium) graduated from the fashion department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he still lives and works as a visual artist and fashion designer. Feeling the need to express himself through imagery he later attended photography classes at the same Art Academy. In 2018 he created FRNCS Studi —“FRNCS” (pronounced “Francis”) is an acronym for “fragments and collected instants”—a project combining photography and collage where personal nostalgia, natural, sacred and architectural themes are merged into surreal compositions. >

Description

“THE RETURN” is part of a series of analog collages called “The sacred and the profane” The artworks are inspired by and named after a religious painting such as “the deposition”, “the conversion”, “the creation”, … using photographic prints on various types of paper, mainly handcrafted japanese mixed with found vintage paper.
-The Creation- (of man) (Genesis 2:7 “The Lord formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”) Are you your body? Is your body you? Are you only your body? Are you more than your body? Do you have a soul? Does your soul go where your body cannot? Why do we have bodies anyway? Questions like this have puzzled even the brightest philosophers since the beginning of time
Every human being certainly has a soul: a part of them that is not visible. Yet there is no denying that from the perspective of other humans, and often from our own perspective, we are our bodies. This is how we interact with the world around us. It is how we reach out and touch one another. And when our bodies finally give out, we can no longer remain in this life. The way a person feels about their body, along with the opinions of others, has a major effect on how that person views him or herself. Things that take place in our bodies have a major impact on our mental state and even our emotional and spiritual welfare. Therefore, we are not the body alone, not the soul alone, but the soul united to the body.
