Mathilde Melsen (°2002) is a Belgian visual artist and illustrator with a strong affinity for ceramics. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Applied Context at Sint Lucas School of Arts in Antwerp, where she works on both publications and autonomous ceramic pieces. She previously obtained her bachelor’s degree in Illustration at the same institution.

In addition to her studies, Mathilde is active in the ceramics studio of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. There, she explores various clay bodies and develops glazes based on oxides. Her work is characterized by an investigative and intuitive approach, where material, image, and meaning interact and reinforce one another.

Description

Vlaanderenstraat is an ode to the modest front gardens often seen in Flemish streets. These small gardens might seem quaint or kitschy at first, but they tell quiet stories about the people who live there. They are personal, familiar, and sometimes a bit peculiar. When viewed from a distance, shapes, colors, and rhythms come together to form an unintended artwork.

With this work, I want to invite people to see their surroundings differently — to look without judgment. There is beauty in the details we often pass by unnoticed.

Within the theme RELATIONSHIPS of the Onboards Biennale, this work explores the connection between people and their immediate environment. The front garden acts as a border between private and public space, but it is also a place where individuals express themselves to the outside world — sometimes consciously, sometimes by chance. By showing this image of a front garden on a billboard, I bring something personal into the public space. This creates a new moment of connection.
