Lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium and Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais, France.

Nadia Naveau studied sculpture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp (1994–1998) and graduated from the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in 2001. Her work has recently been shown at institutions including M HKA (Antwerp, 2021 and 2018), Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens (Deurle, 2019), and Fondazione Prada (Milan, 2018). In 2009, she exhibited at SM’s, Stedelijk Museum, ’s-Hertogenbosch (NL) and De Garage Mechelen. In 2010, she participated in New Monuments at Middelheim Museum, Antwerp. In 2021, she took part in the Bruges Triennial and received the Ernest Albert Grand Prize. That same year and into 2022, she had a major solo show at De Warande, Turnhout (BE). In 2024, her bronze sculpture Athena 2.0 was installed on the rooftop of the GO! Koninklijk Atheneum in Antwerp.

She currently has a large solo exhibition running in Lille, France, as part of the Lille3000 festival, on view until November 2025.

Naveau’s work is held in numerous private and public collections, including M HKA, Antwerp; Middelheim Museum, Antwerp; MuZEE, Ostend; University of Antwerp; National Bank of Belgium; Flemish Parliament; and others.

For the artwork Athena 2.0, which has crowned the rooftop of the GO! Koninklijk Atheneum in Antwerp since 2024, Nadia Naveau created a contemporary interpretation of the Greek goddess Athena. The sculpture symbolizes values such as emancipation, freedom, and shared ideals—core principles of the school it overlooks. As is characteristic of Naveau’s work, Athena 2.0 merges references from art history, pop culture, and personal iconography into a piece that is both playful and powerful.

Photographer Andy Merregaert closely followed Naveau throughout this creative process. His photographs are not mere documentation, but artistic reflections and interpretations of the sculpture. By zooming in on specific elements—such as the shield and the hand, both key motifs in Naveau’s visual language—Merregaert translates the sculptural into the photographic, finding abstraction within detail.

The collaboration between Naveau and Merregaert is grounded in mutual respect and a shared sensitivity to form, material, and meaning. The image shown here is a detail of Athena 2.0—focusing on the shield and hand, which express both strength and playfulness, and exemplify Naveau’s distinctive sculptural style.
