With images showing everyday life and objects of our close environment, Brussels based photographer, Sven Laurent is exploring the questions of space, time and existence, revealing the unconventional beauty of our close environment.

« For me photography has always been about comfort and contemplation. Finding beauty in my close surroundings is a balancing act in order to survive the social and political turmoil of the world we live in. Carrying a camera most of the time, I take pictures wherever I am. I don’t look for the exotic or the spectacular. Images appear to me, triggered by the light, colour, shape or perspective, revealing the beauty that often goes unseen. »

Taken during daily walks, part of a long physical rehabilitation process, my images document a series of found objects and situations in my close environment. As unintended art installations, as if documenting them suddenly gave them some sort of legitimacy, a proper existence. By blurring the boundaries of what is and isn’t a work of art, these images are questioning the photographic document as tool of legitimisation of this existence, inviting the viewer to question his own sense of aesthetics and the way he is looking at his environment.
