LISTEN TO THE AUDIO ABOUT THIS ARTWORK

[ays_poll id=264]

My name is Yasmin Verbist, I’m 33 years old and mother of a beautiful son Leander. I’m a maths and physics teacher and art has been in my life consistently. Since the age of 6, I have been following drawing lessons at the art academy of Lier. At University I chose to study Architecture because it combines my passion for maths and my love to express myself in a creative way. After getting my degree, I lost myself for a few years in the rat race: work, work and more work. Until three years ago, when my husband and I moved back to our hometown, and I realized what makes me truly happy. I went back to art academy and since then I’m following drawing lessons 8 hours a week and 2 hours of art history. Last year I became a mother and the creativity I have been feeling since is indescribable. When I’m not at art school or in front of the class myself, I’m at home creating new art pieces. My work is inspired by my son and family. They are my world. The emotion they give me when I’m with them, is what I try to share with the viewer through my work. I strive for high quality, strong compositions and a high level of finish. The colors and type of paper I choose, are based on the emotion I want to express.

Description

Lizette is my husband’s grandmother on father’s side. She is 93 years old and lives in social housing. Every day Lizette sits at her window looking outside at the small empty street. The blankets over her shoulders protects her against the cold wind coming through the thin glass windows. There is no lack of visitors: children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. You can see that she enjoys their company, but the question remains if Lizette knows what is going on around her. Now she is losing touch with society, we, her family realize how important it is to stay in touch with each other.
