Basho – 場所

The word basho comes from the philosophy of Kitaro Nishida and translates as “place” or topos. But for Nishida, it refers to more than just a physical locatio; it speaks to a non-physical space, a kind of residue or imprint left behind by presence, by memory.

The work I’m proposing for the Onboards Biennale is a photo from a series I created during an artist residency in Japan in November 2024. After returning home to Belgium, the images lingered in my mind, replaying like echoes. I felt the need to give them a physical presence again, a space in which they could continue to exist.

All the photographs from the series were taken with film on an analog camera and remain unedited—yet they appear like faded dreams. Through them, I want to share my memories of this place that has become my basho, and share this with others. The picture I chose for this opencall is one on the trainstation of Haiki, a small village i had to transfer in during my trip to nagasaki. waiting for the next train i got obsessed with the mirrors , they made it possible to drift off into different places all at once.
