My name is Alejandra Aguilar Caballero (1989). I am a Mexican visual artist based in Oslo, Norway. My artistic practice moves freely between drawing, printmaking, and installation. I like to think of my work as a safe place to play with narrative by exploring personal and collective memory, identity, unexpected encounters with nature, and the stories of my everyday life. I establish deep connections between memory, symbols, myths, social patterns, and behaviors to create a personal imagery: an exploration of the past and the present in an ever-changing context.
I hold a Bachelor degree (Honours) in Visual Arts from Facultad de Artes y Diseño of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (2010-2014), and a MFA in Medium and Material Based Art, specializing in Printmaking & Drawing from Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2019-2021). I have participated in collective exhibitions in Mexico, Norway, Spain, Poland, Italy, Czech Republic, and Bulgaria, amongst others. I have also presented my work in multiple solo exhibitions in Mexico and Norway.
“Bird House” is a large-scale graphite drawing part of the series “A House of Landscapes”. The drawing depicts intricate and fantastic scenes inside the room of a house. It talks about ordinary events in my life in Norway, and the connections between narratives present in Latin American texts within Magical Realism. The piece serves as a stage where uncanny and surreal situations, natural elements, animals, and objects clash into a unique composition.
