Description

Listen to the audio description of this artwork:

I wander through an undefined space, unsure whether I am inside or outside. People around me are also drifting. This place has no landmarks to indicate where we are, yet everyone strides forward with confidence, as if they know their destination. What time is it now? I can’t even tell if this is a dream or reality. Dreams feel like reality, and reality feels like a dream. I believe that everyone carries at least one seed of anxiety in their lives, yet here, such anxiety seems nonexistent. I seem to have already arrived in a space where all boundaries—between life and death, the formal lines that divide nations, and the social distinctions between men and women—have blurred with the passage of time. After breathing a sigh of relief, I begin to drift once more, stepping onto another border.

“Born in Seoul in 1982, she made her debut as an artist in 2008. Her early works were influenced by animation, featuring self-reflective characters as a means of expressing the deprivation, loss, and loneliness experienced by modern individuals. By carving holes into the canvas—conceived as symbolic “escape spaces”—she sought to offer visual relief from emotional suffocation.

In the 2010 “Metamorphosis” series, this hole concept became more pronounced, exposing the wooden frame of the canvas and initiating a full-fledged exploration of the painting’s surface. This experimentation continued through the 2018 “Blind” series, raising questions about the structure and boundaries of painting.

Since 2019, she has been producing short animated films using digital media, with her works screened at various animation festivals. These projects represent an extension of her visual language—from static painting to moving images—and serve as a platform for exploring the potential of digital-based practices.

In 2023, she began work on the 100% digital painting series Borderline, delving more deeply into the painterly possibilities of digital media. Based on her experience painting within digital programs, the series experiments with a new visual language where painterly depth and the immateriality of the digital realm intersect.

She is currently expanding her practice through digital works, including short animations and media art, further broadening the boundaries of genre and medium.”
