Description

Presented by: SECONDroom Gallery

Listen to the audio description of this artwork:

‘hi society’ was realized on the occasion of the ONBOARDS BIENNALE. It is a reflection on the role of art in the public space. How can we live together? The words suggest the importance of communication. The wordplay brings in a political layer and points at power structures.

Liesbet Waegemans studied philology. She mainly creates visual art and also writes, very short stories and texts on art. Language often ends up in her installations, editions and artist’s books, exploring its power and playfulness. Inspired by modern literature, AI (and its glitches), advertising, street art and DIY culture, her work addresses topics such as politics and love, and their coming together.

SECONDroom is an artist-run off-space which organizes one day exhibitions. Christophe Floré initiated the project in his private residence in Brussel in 2006, where a spare room mutated into an exhibition space. Every Saturday evening, another contemporary artist was invited. The limitation to one single evening gives the exhibition the impact of a special event, but also gives the artist a certain freedom to take risks and sometimes fail. This is still at the core of SECONDroom, a space for experiment and exchange with a focus on artistic freedom, currently located in Antwerp.
