Beschrijving

The subject of this work, created using the cut-out technique, is the uprising of Iranian women against the strict Islamic regime in Iran. The death of Mahsa Amini, who was killed by the police in 2022 for refusing to wear a headscarf, sparked widespread protests. Many Iranian women and men began openly demonstrating. Iranian women started cutting their hair as a symbol of resistance against the regime and its religious and political oppression. “The Scissors Revolution” is an ode to these brave women who are fighting for their rights.

In this work, I have incorporated decorative geometric patterns inspired by Islamic art found in the historic mosque of Isfahan. This references the country’s rich history and heritage, as well as the current political situation. The composition includes several dancing female figures. Dance, which is also banned by the Iranian regime, serves here as a symbol of freedom and resistance by Iranian women.

This artwork consists of a single sheet of paper with all the shapes cut out. The paper’s structure is fragile, yet at the same time strong.
