Annelies Vaneycken is an artist/designer, educator, and researcher whose practice operates at the intersection of design, art, and social engagement. She develops supportive structures, dialogical spaces, and public narratives aimed at broadening normative perspectives on underrepresented social groups. Under the name Office for Public Play, she focuses on children’s right to the city. Her arts-based research focusses on participatory design methods. She is the author of Designing ‘for’ and ‘with’ ambiguity: actualizing democratic processes in participatory design practices with children. Vaneycken teaches at the MFA design programs of HDK-Valand, the Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg. – www.anneliesvaneycken.be
The photo reflects the relationship between children and the city. It is an ode to children’s explorative and anarchic play, in which they engage with urban spaces in unstructured and imaginative ways, often defying adult-imposed rules. Although such play is becoming increasingly rare in today’s Western context, it remains essential for fostering a sense of agency and belonging.
