In 2012, I earned a Master’s degree in Fine Arts, specializing in ‘Free Graphics’ at LUCA in Ghent. Following that, I completed a teaching degree and ‘Curatorial Studies’ at KASK in 2014. During my search for a suitable studio, I became a part of the artist collective Zwart Wild. Together with other artists, we established an experimental art space on the fringes of the official art world. In addition to running a studio, we organized exhibitions where I sometimes displayed my own work and other times took on a curatorial role. Parallel to my education and involvement with Zwart Wild, I built a solid network within the Flemish and international art scene.
From a young age, it was clear that drawing was the best way for me to express myself. Choosing an art education path was a natural choice for me. Even though I am primarily a drawer, my working style has been strongly influenced by the uniqueness of graphic processes. I meticulously build my drawings layer by layer. Over time, I have developed my own visual language in which I combine colored materials (pigment and pastels) with charcoal and scratch the image with pieces of steel wool, which I have transformed into drawing materials. I usually work in series, focusing on a carefully chosen theme or subject for an extended period. An intensive period of visual research and material testing leads to refined works. Once installed in the space, my works invite a sense of quiet contemplation due to their subdued expressiveness.

This work was created during a residency at Arteventura in Spain and is part of a series of four. The title refers to one of the many nicknames of the Opuntia ficus-indica. These solitary, exotic plants stood out among the cork and holm oaks that dominate the landscape in this region of Andalusia. I zoom in on their striking, sculptural forms and the dotted pattern of their spines. They appear to gaze back at you, while the light in the background hints at their native habitat.
