PRESENTED BY FOTO MUSEUM – FOMU:

Het FOMU is een van de meest prestigieuze en toonaangevende musea voor fotografie in Europa. Als een open huis treden we in dialoog met ons publiek. Het FOMU verzamelt en beheert unieke collecties van fotobeelden, apparatuur en fotoboeken. Het FOMU maakt ambitieuze tentoonstellingen die contextualiseren en verbinden. Het FOMU is ambassadeur van jong talent en gevestigde waarden van eigen bodem. Het FOMU inspireert en verrijkt.

Visual artist and photographer, my work is based on research aimed at establishing the cultural and historical foundations of the ecological crisis that faces our modernity. Started at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Photographie (Arles) and pursued with the support of different European art institutions (such as Musée du quai Branly (Paris), Wiels Center for Contemporary Art (Brussels) and the FOMU (Antwerp), the art and research project that I’m currently leading focuses on the civilization process that took place in the Brazilian Amazon at the turn of the 20th century.

Description

My project Rondônia (how I fell in love with a line) explores the ecological, social and spiritual mutations that Amazonia underwent. And even if it is limited to a specific period and a geographical space, the history of this transformation presents a considerable interest to comprehend the philosophical and phantasmatic structures which underlie and justify the spirit of discovery, the ideal of conquest and permanent domination proper to the Western modernity.

At the intersection of official history, erased memory and personal narrative, my work explores, through poetic and creative means, the ecological, social and spiritual mutations that this territory underwent.

And even if it is limited to a specific period and a geographical space, the history of this transformation presents a considerable interest to comprehend the philosophical and phantasmatic structures which underlie and justify the spirit of discovery, the ideal of conquest and permanent domination proper to the Western modernity.
