PRESENTED BY GALLERY ZWARTE PANTER:

Tom Liekens (°1977) lives and works in Antwerp where he graduated in 1999 from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. The artist makes monumental paintings, woodcuts and collages. He is fascinated by the unrealistic way in which fauna and flora are usually presented in paintings, in fairy tales and myths, and in films. These images show how humans relate to nature and to ‘other’ animals. Man ignores the real characteristics of the animal by projecting and ascribing all kind of things to them. Those images also demonstrate persistent prejudices, against any evidence to the contrary. They show how strong the feelings are that certain animals evoke in us. Like the paintings by Liekens himself, they ultimately tell more about us as humans than about the animals depicted. With his work he expresses the animal in man and the humane in the animal.
